In July, 1999, I completed a stained
glass commission for the new Aspen Worship Centre at the Manitoba
Developmental Centre in Portage
la Prairie.
MDC had been working towards
building a non-denominational worship centre for its nearly 500
residents for several
years. The majority of
the project funds came from the estate of Nora Bottomley.
She, and her brother Leonard, were
longtime residents of MDC.
When Nora passed, her sisters donated the proceeds of her estate
to MDC for the
express purpose of building
a place of worship.
As an art instructor at the
Centre, it was exciting to work together with my students who contributed
enormously to my
design plans. In respect
of the interdenominational aspects of the centre -- religious
icons couldn't be incorporated.
This culminated in pieces which
celebrate their love of colour and freedom of expression -- a
celebration of life.
Some of the most positive people
it has ever been my pleasure to work with -- the collages they
created in our art
sessions have inspired the
brilliant hues and abstraction of design.
There are 4, 40" x 32" inch
panels in the east and south windows, 10" x 60"sidelights in the main
entrance, and a set
of 3, 24" discs suspended in
the skylight of the tower above.
